I’ve found myself in this space before. My writing slacked off due to, well, tons of stuff and it becomes hard to get back to it. In fact, much like an exercise program or that diet you want to start, it becomes about tomorrow. Tomorrow I’ll start. But we know tomorrow never comes. Tomorrow doesn’t exist. It’s a construct we invented because of course as soon as we arrive at tomorrow, it’s today. It’s now. So now that I’ve done my Alan Watts imitation, at least I can say I’m back to it.

The struggle for me has been wrapping up a book I’ve been working on. Now, I’ve written a book before. Truth be told, when I wrote Just Do The Work: The Portable Nonprofit Coach, I’d say it was more like a Pandemic Project and a compilation of writings I had done with my nonprofit experience through the years. I put structure around it, provided theme intros and outros and re-wrote a few pieces for clarity and conciseness. Ultimately though, it wasn’t new and fresh writing. After a few friends and colleagues proofed it and commented on it, I self-published it. I used it more as a calling card. I do have plans — no not for tomorrow — to restructure it and get it out there as I say humbly, there is value in what I’ve shared.

Earlier this year, I wrote a fresh and original book and it was completed in May. All new stories and ideas. I won’t share today what it’s about. Anyway, I found a publishing company that provided a package that included proofing, cover design, marketing — the whole thing. It has truly been a learning journey. A good one and nevertheless, a journey that I’m looking forward to completing.

My focus on finishing has kept me away from daily writing like this. If you happen to follow my writing, if you’re part of that very unique and exclusive group, I can’t offer much in this first post other than it being, in fact, my first post in a while.

My point was simply to take action and stop with the tomorrow stuff. It’s the realization that with any sort of creative activity there is an element of scale. There’s THE BIG STUFF. You know, working on a book. Creating an album. Well, nix that. Nobody, no musicians, make albums per se. But they do offer groups of songs.

Back to my original point. You don’t stop the creative stream just because you’re in the middle of a BIG STUFF project. You keep with it. You do a little bit every day. You share it. Sometimes you’re sharing into dead silence and worst ever in our world of social media: SILENCE. No likes, thumbs up. Nothing. But you keep on it because the continuity of the little stuff is the surprising foundation of the BIG STUFF. That oddball day you sit down just to keep to it and surprise: You have something to say that demands to be heard. Or read.

So. To be continued.
